When I discuss the subject with people around me, some of the HTML5 love has vaporized, and people are having a more balanced view on effort vs. result. Now, Creative Suite 6 out in the open and with that, technologies like Edge and Flash, trying to satisfy different groups of people. Edge is a "visual jQuery" acting like an After Effects relative, and Flash is opening it's door towards JavaScript/canvas programmers, while trying to hold on to their "code once, publish everywhere" - thoughts. This should keep them busy for a while. If Flash can implement that effectively (it's surely not there yet, with this first release) it could end up being a preferred tool for doing timeline animation for JavaScript/canvas developers as well.

Adobe, on the other hand, is also taking to dedicated steps, towards a higher level of performance and interactive capabilities in the coming versions of ActionScript and the Flash platform. If you look at http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flashplatform/whitepapers/roadmap.html you can see that "Dolores" and "Next" are taking steps towards a high performance gaming monster. This would also bring more power to designers that are making interactive experiences.

As it is now, I see the desktop player serving social games, campaign sites etc. with great looking mobile sites in HTML5 and native applications for off-browser experiences.

Some of the designers are realizing, that they cannot make a single site, that works everywhere, so while they are developing they some times develop, where there is more bang for the bucks - that tends to be Flash on the desktop and HTML/JS og devices.

Take a look at http://wearemaersk.com/ for a solution, that utilize Flash on the desktop, and effectively communicating via HTML on devices.

I think the main issue is, that web browsers on mobile devices aren't suited for this type of content. When the canvas element comes into play, it suffers from the same bad habits as Flash did (search engine optimization, lack of bookmarking features, usability for people with disabilities, processor and battery consumption etc.)

In addition to that, the user often leans toward Apps, when they wan't "experiences", and Flash is all about building interactive experiences, that can't be done in HTML. When devices has more than enough work to do, trying to run HTML, in it's new, more capable form, there is no need to maintain an expensive and ever changing Android platform.

That may be the one reason, why Adobe abandoned the mobile version of the player (for now), and focus on the desktop player, mobile applications, and all the stuff that HTML can't do easily (and/or economicly)

Really good reasoned consideration of this dilemma. To me, moving from Flash to HTML5 feels like having to take a step backwards in time about 10 years. But I also think you are saying that Flash/Flex will retain it's primary home on the larger screen (PCs, laptops) where rich media is really called for and tremendously useful.

Thanks.
